The thing to remember Clark is that the greater the negative power of the blank, the more wideangle your camera will see. So a -10 will give a wider view than a -5, though the -10 will give you more barrel distortion (ALL straight lines will be curved unless they pass through the centre of the film frame). The more powerful the element the bigger it'll have to be (in diameter) to avoid vignetting the image (making the corners go dark).
If you buy old lenses at boot sales and break them open (as I often do) youi'll often come across very powerful negative elements. Often they're beautifully coated and cost peanuts. I have made up lenses in this way, even cementing two or even 3 elements together to increase the popwer.

I don't know what they call them in Texas, but we refer to them as "Flea-Markets"
A boot is the same as the trunk of a car.
A boot sale is a bunch of folks selling stuff out of the trunk of their cars.
I'm assuming "breaking them open" is the same as disassembling.

Tom,
i apologize for the fact that ever response you give me leads me to another question, but oh well. i guess we're having a discussion here. neat. anyway...
what do you mean 'boot sale?' and what do you mean 'break them open?' this thoroughly confused me. i'm thinking...'they have lenses in boots in England?'
